Last night, the most anticipated series premiere in trash TV history aired, and didn’t fail to entertain. MTV’s Jersey Shore had all of the elements of a Grade A trashy show. Fights, superficiality, hooking up, relationship infidelity, vomiting, heartbreak, jealousy, girls with unwarranted self-importance, girls with low self-esteem, hot tubs, skinny dipping, cock blocking, and drunk girls falling down stairs. Where is the show’s Emmy? This is like watching Lebron James’ first NBA game, and he wins the championship without playing the other 81 games left in the season.

They all (but one “true Italian”) are self-professed guidos and guidettes.

The cultural stereotype component is what makes the show interesting. So far, every stereotype on the checklist about guidos from the Northeast has been covered except the IROC Camaros. (None of the fellas drive one.) Hair gel, fake baking, douchebaggery, tats, “protein shakes”, and being vain to a fault are a few of the stereotypes that MTV quickly got out of the way last night in the premiere’s two-hour long special.

As the show became more and more entertaining, l had a guilty feeling knowing that had MTV covered something like blacks who openly profess to being “niggas”, eat fried chicken all day, have criminal records, and are hyper-sexual (as is the case with guidos), I would head to New York, and burn down MTV’s headquarters. (Ok, ok, I wouldn’t do that, but I would stop watching MTV for a long time.) Knowing an Italian-American somewhere is rolling his eyes in disgust makes it difficult for me to truly enjoy the show.

I guess people that make great buffoons of themselves will always have people laughing at them, and not with them (myself included).
